The Trump administration plans to appoint an American two-star general to command the International Stabilization Force (ISF) in Gaza, according to Axios today. The report cites two US officials and two Israeli officials.
Reuters could not immediately verify the reports.
UN resolution background
A United Nations Security Council resolution, adopted on 17 November, authorized a Board of Peace and cooperating countries to establish a temporary International Stabilization Force in Gaza.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz, who visited Israel this week, told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials that the Trump administration will lead the ISF. He added that it will appoint a two-star general as commander, per Axios.
Official responses
The White House and Pentagon did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
President Donald Trump told reporters on Wednesday that the announcement of world leaders staffing the Gaza Board of Peace will come early next year.
Board of Peace role
The US-drafted resolution described the Board of Peace as a transitional administration. It will set the framework and coordinate funding for Gaza’s redevelopment. This aligns with Trump’s peace plan to end the war with the Hamas.
