Trump backs SAVE America Act
President Donald Trump is campaigning for the SAVE America Act, a bill that would require all new voters to prove U.S. citizenship when registering and present approved identification at the polls. Supporters claim it will secure election integrity, while Democrats argue it could disenfranchise millions of Americans.
Stricter ID rules for new voters
The legislation would mandate passports, birth certificates, or military IDs for registration, with driver’s licenses often insufficient. Voting by mail would require a photocopy of the documents. Advocacy groups warn this could slow voter registration and create barriers for eligible voters.
Federal access to state voter rolls
The bill also requires states to share voter registration information with the Department of Homeland Security to verify citizenship, giving the federal government unprecedented access to state voter data. Critics say this risks mass purges and interference with state election administration.
Trump seeks additional provisions
Trump is pushing for extra measures, including limits on mail-in voting and restrictions tied to transgender athletes and youth medical procedures. If enacted, the rules would take effect immediately, raising concerns about cost, implementation, and voter confusion ahead of the 2026 midterms.
