Trump: If no deal is reached with Iran, “bad things” will happen

US president repeats threat over lack of agreement

US President Donald Trump warned once again on Monday that “bad things could happen” to Iran if Washington and Tehran fail to reach an agreement, stepping up pressure on the Islamic Republic amid renewed tensions.

Speaking to reporters, Trump linked the latest warning to Iran’s violent crackdown on protests in January, while maintaining a hard-line US stance towards Tehran.

Strong US military presence in the Gulf

Washington, which has not ruled out military action, has already deployed significant air and naval forces in the Gulf region.

Referring to this show of force, the Republican president reminded journalists that a “great power” would soon be in place, underlining US readiness in the area.

Trump says talks preferred but threats remain

“I’m not going to tell you what I decided about Iran,” Trump said. “I would like a deal to be reached through negotiations.”

He added that the US is currently in contact with Tehran. “We’re talking to Iran, and if we can reach a deal, that would be great. If we can’t, bad things could probably happen,” he warned.

Iran prepares for talks with Washington

Iran confirmed on Monday that it is preparing for talks with the United States, particularly on the country’s nuclear energy programme, following weeks of escalating threats between the two sides.

The renewed diplomatic signals come amid heightened tensions and continued international concern over Iran’s domestic and regional policies.
