U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday referred to the possibility of deploying American troops to Iran in the future to control the country’s stockpiles of enriched uranium.
“Maybe at some point we will do that. That would be great,” Trump said when asked by reporters traveling with him aboard Air Force One.
The White House has argued, among other reasons to justify the attack on Iran, that Tehran has accumulated enriched uranium stockpiles to levels that bring it very close to developing a nuclear weapon.
Trump opposes Kurdish attacks inside Iran
At the same time, Trump said he does not want Kurdish forces to launch attacks on Iranian territory.
“I don’t want the Kurds going in. I don’t want to see Kurds getting hurt or killed,” he told reporters.
He stressed that the White House is not considering Kurdish attacks inside Iran, saying that although the United States maintains friendly relations with Kurdish groups, it does not want to make the conflict more complicated than it already is.
However, in an interview with Reuters on Thursday, the U.S. president had said he would support an attack by Iranian Kurdish militias against the government in Tehran.
Trump blames Iran for school bombing
Trump also claimed that Iran was responsible for the bombing of a school in the city of Minab, questioning the accuracy of Iranian military strikes.
“From what I have seen, that was done by Iran,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.
According to The New York Times, however, the school strike may have been caused by a U.S. airstrike.
Neither the United States nor Israel has admitted responsibility for the attack.
