Trump’s arrival in Europe
Air Force One landed in Zurich after a minor technical issue forced a return flight earlier. First stop for Trump is a meeting with business leaders before his Davos address.
The president said he has “many meetings planned for Greenland.” His trip was delayed but is now back on track.
Greenland dispute and tariff threats
Trump has threatened to impose a 10% tariff on goods from eight European countries starting February 1 if they oppose his Greenland plans.
When asked how far he would go to acquire Greenland, Trump replied: “You’ll find out.”
Analysis: Not about Greenland
Investor Josh Wolfe wrote that Greenland is not the real goal. The aim is control over rare earth elements critical to US defense, including dysprosium and terbium. China currently dominates over 90% of global processing.
According to Wolfe, Trump’s strategy follows a pattern: extreme initial demand, international backlash, then shift to a “logical” economic proposal. The rhetoric of force pressures negotiations from sovereignty to economic terms.
Davos speech focus: America first
The Trump speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos will focus on “America First.” Topics may include Greenland and Venezuela. He will also discuss his Board of Peace and US influence in the Western Hemisphere.
International response
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Britain will not yield to Trump’s Greenland pressure. He stressed the UK will uphold its principles and support Greenland.
Starmer also referenced Trump’s criticism of the UK’s Chagos Islands return plan, saying the US strategy is part of a broader attempt to pressure allies. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will visit the UK for talks on the matter.
