The illegal trial of five Greek Cypriots held in the occupied area of Cyprus continued on Tuesday at the so-called “military court” in occupied Nicosia.
Proceedings focused on testimony from prosecution witnesses, all members of the pseudo-police, including officers from the so-called “immigration department” and “IT unit.” Their evidence related to the electronic system monitoring entries and exits at checkpoints.
One IT witness claimed that any deletions or alterations to the records would be visible in the database, insisting no data had been removed. However, he admitted there had been “minor changes” to the details of one defendant on the relevant day, possibly involving corrections such as place of birth or vehicle registration. He added that the exact nature of the change was not visible in the submitted document but only in the central database.
A circular regarding the duties of staff at checkpoints was also presented, focusing on whether they are obliged to check vehicle interiors. Defence lawyers argued the instructions were vague and that failure to inspect vehicles could allow entry of individuals under travel bans.
During the hearing, defence counsel raised concerns about one of the defendants held in the so-called “central prisons,” who has serious health issues and had not been taken to a doctor despite repeated requests. Following this, the “court” issued an order for his immediate transfer to a fully equipped “state hospital” for medical examination.
The trial of five Greek Cypriots was adjourned until Wednesday morning at 10:00, when two further witnesses are expected, including the case’s “investigator.”
Tuesday’s session dealt with charges of alleged “violation of a military zone” and “illegal entry into the occupied areas.” A separate hearing on additional charges, including “illegal entry into property,” is scheduled to continue on Friday at the so-called “district court” of Trikomo.
