Transport Ministry pays Takata airbag compensation

Date:

The Transport, Communications and Works Ministry paid a one-off amount, Thursday, December 18, 2025, to eligible recipients under Cabinet-approved support measures.

These measures address vehicle fitness certificate cancellations due to unreplaced airbags in vehicles listed in the February 2025 recall.

The Road Transport Department, in collaboration with the Social Welfare Services’ Benefits Management Service, executed payments following the November 5, 2025, Cabinet decision and November 6 announcement on the ministry website titled “Support measures for citizens who scheduled airbag replacement appointments.”

Recipients qualify for €100 per week of vehicle immobilization if they meet conditions, belong to specified categories, and own no other registered vehicle.

Eligibility conditions and categories

Conditions:

  • Vehicle immobilized from October 31, 2025, or earlier, and
  • Appointment scheduled for recall implementation by January 2026.

Eligible categories:

A. Benefits recipients:

  • Guaranteed Minimum Income (GMI),
  • low pensioners,
  • single parents,
  • large families with four or more children regardless of age.

B. Owners of disabled persons’ vehicles.

Category A recipients received payments to bank accounts registered with the Benefits Management Service. Disabled vehicle owners get payments soon to Road Transport Department accounts.

This payout covers up to November 30, 2025; further payments follow.

The Road Transport Department’s Public Passenger Transport Section already issued free public transport tickets to eligible recipients under the same Cabinet decision.
