As August begins, Hermes Airports is preparing for a surge in passenger traffic, as this beloved summer month consistently records the highest number of travellers at the Cypriot airports. In 2024, passenger numbers exceeded 1.6 million for the first time, and this August is expected to set a new record, given the particularly increased traffic at Larnaca and Pafos airports since the beginning of the year.

Ahead of the peak travel period, we asked the operator of Cyprus’ airports for some advice on how to make your journey more comfortable. Below, we present everything you need to know if you’re travelling in the coming days – or, if you’re not quite so lucky, what’s good to keep in mind for when you do travel later on:

- Plan to arrive at the airport in good time – at least two hours before your flight departs. During peak periods, Hermes Airports shares updated guidance via its social media channels for even earlier arrival, if deemed necessary.
- If you plan to park your vehicle at the airport, reserve your space early via the Hermes Airports website – up to two hours before your journey. This allows you to explore all the flexible parking options and take advantage of the lower prices available through online booking.
- Discover the digital chatbot tool, which can send you notifications for every stage of your scheduled trip – such as gate opening and number, estimated departure time, and your check-in counter number. This service is activated through the relevant widget on Facebook Messenger, X (Twitter), or Viber via the Hermes website, in the “Flight Information” section for either Larnaca or Pafos airport. The tool is also useful for planning the best time to arrive at the airport when picking up arriving passengers at either Larnaca or Pafos. You can view the relevant video tutorial on how to use the chatbot.
- You can avoid waiting in line for check-in by doing it online through the website of your airline, or by using the self-service check-in kiosks available at Larnaca and Pafos airports, provided by several airlines. Even if you need to check in a bag, you can use the Tagomat® and Bagomat machines to print your baggage tag within seconds, and then drop off your luggage at the designated Self-Tagging Baggage Drop-Off point – allowing you to continue your journey without delay. Airport staff are available to assist if needed, and a video explaining the process can be found on the Hermes website.
- Make sure to have your boarding pass available either in printed form or electronically (via your smartphone’s Wallet app or your airline’s app) so you can pass quickly through the automated electronic gates (e-gates) before the security check.
- Prefer to travel with a biometric ID document (passport/ID card) so you can make use of the BorderXpress machines at Cypriot airports. These operate with facial recognition technology and speed up passport control procedures.
- Be sure to be at your departure gate at the time recommended by your airline. After passing through the necessary checks, the updated commercial and dining areas are ideal for grabbing a coffee or meal before your flight, or for shopping at the duty-free stores. Note that the duty-free shops also offer an online pre-ordering service before your flight, or the option to shop at departure and collect your items upon your return to Cyprus.
- Make your baggage screening process easier by following the rules regarding allowed items and liquids. A reminder: all areas of the Cypriot airports are equipped with water fountains providing free drinking water.
- Find out about the Fast Track services available at Larnaca and Pafos airports, and reserve your slot online in advance. With the Express Lane, you can follow a faster route to reduce queue times and reach the screening points more promptly – giving you more time for shopping or to relax in the departure lounge before your flight. Express Lane is also available in the Arrivals area before reaching the control points.
If you’re looking for extra comfort and quiet before boarding, the specially designed airport lounges at Larnaka and Pafos are the ideal place to relax or work, offering complimentary snacks and beverages. - If you’re travelling with a pet, make sure you’re informed about all the important rules, regulations, and useful tips to ensure your pet’s comfort and wellbeing during the flight.
- If you’re a passenger with a disability or reduced mobility, Cypriot airports provide a range of facilities and dedicated staff to ensure your journey is smooth and prioritised.
- Lastly, a reminder that since last March, upgrade works have commenced at the Cypriot airports. At Larnaca Airport, vehicle access is now only available via the Departures level, while the bus and taxi waiting areas have been relocated. Passengers are advised to follow the on-site signage.
