Sovereign Base Areas Customs and Immigration has confirmed the seizure of 17,500 cigarettes,
21 kilograms of rolling tobacco and 5,500 e-cigarettes since the beginning of July.
Statistics show from July 1, 115,000 vehicles have used its crossing points, which has led to the high volume of successful seizures by the 50 operational Customs staff running 24-hour checks.
Close to €11,000 in fines were issued, with two standout seizures at the Pergamos crossing point.
The first occurred on July 4, according to Katerina Christofi, ESBA Higher Officer Customs and Immigration, who said: “This significant seizure involved two passengers travelling in separate taxis which arrived consecutively.
“Our officers suspected the individuals were travelling together but had chosen separate vehicles in an attempt to avoid detection.
“One passenger was found carrying 13.1 kilos of hand-rolling tobacco, while the second was carrying 5.65 kilos. Combined fines issued amounted to €6,300.”
On August 4, 2,400 cigarettes, 500 grams of hand-rolling tobacco and 600 electronic cigarettes were discovered concealed inside the folding roof compartment of a convertible vehicle, which led to a fine of €1,680.
Speaking from her office in Dhekelia, Christofi continued: “Customs and Immigration officers maintain a 24- hour presence at both crossing points, working tirelessly to intercept illegal goods and subsequently issue strong fines.
“Given the high volume of traffic crossing during the peak summer period, it is imperative that our officers remain vigilant to enforce compliance with the rules and regulations and that any violations are dealt with robustly.”
