Three arrested over factory explosion
Authorities arrested the owner, the security officer, and the shift supervisor of the Violanta factory on Tuesday following the explosion that killed five female workers.
The three face charges related to acts and omissions, including negligent homicide, repeated serious bodily harm, arson, and causing an explosion.
Suspects to appear before prosecutor
All three suspects remain in custody and will appear before the Trikala prosecutor on Wednesday, January 28.
Two of the three experts appointed by the Fire Crime Investigation Division (DAEE) concluded that an explosion like the one that destroyed the factory could only result from a propane leak. One worker on shift testified that they noticed a gas odor in the production area before the explosion. The area contained the ovens, where investigators believe a sudden ignition triggered the blast.
Propane tanks and initial findings
The factory yard housed two large propane tanks connected via pipelines to the production area. Authorities are collecting material from the site and witness statements to understand the cause of the explosion. Fire department officials are expected to release further updates.
Investigators are examining reports of a gas odor in recent days. However, the propane tanks that supplied the ovens remained intact. Initial findings suggest that a leak in the internal distribution system allowed gas to accumulate in the underground area, where the explosion occurred. Scientists also consider it possible that a secondary explosion was triggered by flour dust present in the facility.
Witness statements key to investigation
Authorities consider the statements of employees present during the fatal shift as crucial. The security chief of the factory has already provided testimony. Others who were scheduled to work that night but were excused to rest after the New Year cake-cutting ceremony will also give statements.
Officials have located the fifth missing worker and are now cleaning the premises to facilitate investigations by experts and the Fire Crime Investigation Division.
