The British newspaper The Guardian has announced it will cease posting on its official accounts on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X.
In a message to its readers, The Guardian stated that it believes the drawbacks of using the platform formerly known as Twitter now outweigh any benefits.
The announcement mentioned that this was a decision they’ve considered for some time, given the often troubling content promoted or shared on the platform, including far-right conspiracy theories and racist posts.
It further noted that the recent U.S. presidential elections have only underscored what they’ve long felt: that X is a toxic news platform and that its owner, Elon Musk, has used his influence to shape political discourse.
The Guardian has more than 80 official accounts on X, with approximately 27 million followers collectively. However, journalists from the newspaper will still be permitted to use X for information gathering or personal posts.
This decision comes as Mr Musk is confirmed to be joining the Trump administration, taking on the role of Minister of Efficiency. In response, Musk referred to The Guardian as a “crooked, miserable propaganda machine.”
