Tension in Pachna: Livestock farmers attack veterinary officials

Date:

Tensions escalated in Pachna on Thursday as livestock farmers intervened during operations by veterinary services linked to measures against foot-and-mouth disease.

According to reports by RIK, farmers reportedly attacked veterinary officers after they had completed sampling in livestock units in the area.

The samples taken from two farms were seized by the farmers, who also took the keys of an official vehicle belonging to the veterinary staff.

Incident involving media crew

A television crew from RIK was also reportedly targeted during the incident.

Farmers in the area allegedly shouted at the journalists and issued threats in an attempt to prevent footage from being recorded as they were covering the ongoing situation in Pachna.

Police presence and ongoing meetings

Police were deployed to the area as tensions continued to rise over planned culling measures related to confirmed cases of foot-and-mouth disease.

At the same time, a meeting is underway at the Pachna community council office involving veterinary services, police, the farm owner where the infection was detected, and other relevant authorities.

Discussions are focused on determining the next steps in managing the outbreak and responding to the escalating tensions.
