Teachers’ strike over evaluation plan disrupts morning lessons

Date:

Secondary school teachers staged a teachers’ strike over the new evaluation plan on Wednesday morning, walking out from 7.30am to 11am in protest against the government’s proposed bill.

The Education Committee of the House of Representatives is scheduled to begin its article-by-article examination of the bill at 2pm.

Unions have called on educators to gather outside parliament in a coordinated demonstration, insisting the proposal suffers from serious flaws.

The government, meanwhile, urged teachers on Tuesday to act responsibly, stressing that the reform must go ahead. Officials reiterated that failure to implement the changes will result in Cyprus losing €60 million from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.

Due to the strike, no morning routes of school buses will operate. Parents were asked to make alternative arrangements to ensure their children arrive at school at 11am, once the strike ends. Afternoon routes will run as normal.

Students who do not attend will be marked absent for administrative purposes only, with the absence not counting toward overall attendance.
