Justice Minister stresses need for interim prison upgrades

Targeted improvement works at the Central Prisons are necessary until their relocation, in order to ensure smooth operation, enhanced security and improved living conditions for inmates, Justice and Public Order Minister Costas Fytiris said on Tuesday.

The minister made the remarks during a meeting with directors and senior officials from the Public Works Department, the Electromechanical Services and the Central Prisons Directorate, focusing on coordination and acceleration of planned upgrades at the existing facilities.

Clear timelines set for completion within six months

According to a statement from the Ministry of Justice, clear implementation timelines were agreed, with the aim of completing the projects within three to six months at the latest. The minister also issued instructions for continuous monitoring of progress to ensure that works proceed according to schedule.

Prison expansion plan cancelled as new site secured

During the meeting, Minister Fytiris confirmed that the previously planned expansion of the existing prison complex has been cancelled, as a site has now been secured for the construction of new prison facilities.

He underlined, however, that until the relocation takes place, it is essential to proceed with targeted improvement projects to safeguard functionality, security and decent living standards for inmates.

Planned works include medical, security and infrastructure upgrades

Among the projects being planned are the renovation of prison medical facilities, the creation of a new entrance exclusively for prison staff, the construction of a new clothing storage facility, and the establishment of a new medical unit at the Open Prisons.

Additional works include the construction of a new laundry facility to serve inmates’ needs, as well as the installation of a mobile phone signal blocking system, according to the ministry’s announcement.

Electronic monitoring system already underway

At the same time, the procurement and deployment of an electronic monitoring system has already been launched. The relevant order has been completed, and delivery of the equipment from the contractor is expected shortly.

The system aims to expand the use of conditional releases for inmates, while ensuring full protection of public safety.

Commitment to coordination and measurable results

Minister Fytiris reiterated his commitment to close cooperation with all competent services to ensure timely completion of the interventions and the achievement of tangible and measurable results, the statement concluded.
