The Nicosia Criminal Court on Wednesday sentenced two prison guards to three years in prison in connection with the Tansu Cidan prison murder. They were found guilty of manslaughter by omission in the death of Turkish Cypriot inmate Tansu Cidan at the Central Prisons.
At the previous hearing on 13 August, the court had reserved its decision on the sentences for the five defendants in the case.
A third prison guard, who was found guilty of causing death by a reckless and negligent act, received an 18-month prison sentence suspended for three years.
The main defendant in the case, who was found guilty of premeditated murder, was handed a life sentence. Testimony revealed that he repeatedly and brutally assaulted the victim over an extended period on 26 and 27 October 2022. He also received additional prison sentences for drug possession and use, which will run concurrently.
Another inmate at the Central Prisons, who was convicted of drug possession and supply, was sentenced to one year in prison for each offence. These sentences will also run concurrently.
The Tansu Cidan prison murder case has raised significant concerns about violence and accountability within Cyprus’s prison system.
