A 24-year-old man has been arrested in Nicosia after a breathalyser test showed an alcohol reading more than five times the legal limit.
The Nicosia drink-driving arrest took place in the early hours of Monday morning during routine traffic checks carried out by police.
Traffic officers stopped the vehicle on Prokopiou Street in Nicosia and subjected the driver to a breathalyser test.
The final reading was 117 micrograms (μg), compared with the legal limit of 22μg.
The driver was arrested and taken into custody. He is expected to appear before Nicosia District Court on Monday morning for the immediate filing of the case.
More than 3,000 drink-driving offences this year
According to police, more than 3,000 drivers have been reported for driving under the influence of alcohol since the beginning of the year.
Police stressed that drink-driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal and serious road collisions.
Alcohol impairs the mental and psychological functions required for driving, reducing a driver's performance and increasing the risk of involvement in a road accident.
