Syria: Turkish-backed SNA takes control of Manbij

Date:

The Turkey-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) has gained control of the Manbij enclave in Syria, the only area west of the Euphrates River previously controlled by Kurdish forces.

In recent days, SNA forces advanced toward Manbij after capturing the other Kurdish-held enclave of Tel Rifaat on 1 December, following an offensive by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) jihadists against government forces in Aleppo.

Ankara equates the Kurdish separatist faction PYD and the militia of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeastern Syria with terrorism and the PKK, which operates against Turkey. It has repeatedly called on the United States to halt its support for these groups.
