Supermarket price increases recorded

Date:

Rising costs in everyday products

New supermarket price increases have been identified by the Cyprus Consumers Association, with rising costs affecting a range of everyday food products.

According to the announcement, the most notable increases were recorded in pasta, cheeses, chocolates, locally produced flour, and yoghurt.

Data analysis from e-kalathi

The findings are based on analysis of the e-kalathi platform, which has been publicly available since June 12, 2025. Data recorded on May 3, 2026 was compared with figures from July 2025.

In July 2025, the lowest total cost for 267 common products was recorded at Sklavenitis supermarket at €926.52, followed by Athienitis at €979.49.

As of May 3, 2026, based on 230 common products, Athienitis now records the lowest cost at €864.69, with Sklavenitis following at €895.84.

Weak competition and wide price gaps

The report indicates that strong competition is limited to only a small number of supermarkets. In most cases, price differences between stores remain significant and do not reflect intense competition.

On average, the gap between the most expensive and the cheapest supermarkets reaches around 60%.

In one analysis of 335 products from a specific supermarket, prices were found to be significantly higher than the average, with some exceeding a 100% difference.

Increases across multiple categories

From April 14, 2026, supermarket price increases began to emerge across products listed on e-kalathi. By April 30, increases exceeding 1% were recorded in 39 product categories, affecting 241 products.

The conclusions are based exclusively on prices recorded on the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry’s e-kalathi platform, as well as data from the private “Smart Kalathi” application.

Ongoing monitoring of prices

The Cyprus Consumers Association says it will continue to monitor supermarket price increases and publish its findings to ensure transparency for consumers.
