UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative Colin Stewart is expected to have separate meetings on Friday with the leaders of the two communities, amid efforts to open more crossing points in the island and restart the stalled Cyprus talks.
According to the Presidency of the Republic, Stewart’s meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides will take place at 1500 (local time).
The UN diplomat will then cross to the Turkish-occupied north for his meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.
Stewart met on Thursday morning with the negotiators of the two sides, Menelaos Menelaou and Gunes Onar.
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council is set on Friday to convene to renew the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces’ mandate in Cyprus for another year.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
