Stavros Demosthenous murder trial begins today

Date:

The trial of six suspects accused in the Stavros Demosthenous murder case begins on Tuesday. The 49-year-old businessman was killed on 17 October 2025.

Suspects and charges

The defendants include two 30-year-olds, a 31-year-old, a 51-year-old, and two 28-year-olds. They face charges including premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, conspiracy to commit murder, vehicle arson, illegal possession and use of firearms, possession and use of explosives, and vehicle theft.

Four of the suspects were originally charged separately from the two 28-year-olds, who were recently arrested in Thessaloniki under a European arrest warrant. Both cases were suspended and formally discontinued to allow joint proceedings, with all six referred to trial at the Assize Court.

Roles in the crime

  • One 30-year-old is linked to the purchase of a motorcycle used in the perpetrators’ escape following the van arson.
  • The other 30-year-old, already serving a sentence for a separate offence, allegedly directed the motorcycle purchase from prison.
  • The 51-year-old, released on bail, had DNA found in a stolen vehicle used to monitor the victim.
  • The 31-year-old is accused of driving the van from which shots were fired and assisting a 28-year-old suspect to escape via occupied areas. His DNA was found on a hat dropped during the escape, and he allegedly arranged fake plates for the stolen vehicle.
  • One 28-year-old is believed to be the shooter, while the other acted as getaway driver in an SUV.

Court proceedings

The Assize Court is scheduled to convene at 9:00 on Tuesday to begin hearings. The case is expected to examine the full sequence of events, the suspects’ involvement, and forensic evidence linking them to the murder.
