Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou stated that the Christodoulides government, through the Interior Ministry, consistently implements a comprehensive policy for revitalizing local communities and shaping sustainable cities.
He spoke during the inauguration of a project creating sports activity areas and green spaces in Sotira, with a total budget of €900,000, co-funded 60% by the EU.
Project funding and timeline
The work, under the “Thaleia 2021-2027” Cohesion Policy Programme, received 60% EU funding, 25% national resources, and 15% from Ayia Napa Municipality. Construction began in June 2024 and completed in July 2025.
Ioannou described it as marking a new era for Sotira and Ayia Napa, reflecting collective goals to upgrade quality of life in cities and communities.
Focus on social impact
The project exemplifies modern European policy centering citizens and local societies, with rational use of EU funds leading to tangible interventions.
Its central goal strengthens social, economic, and environmental development without exclusions, especially outside major urban centers, improving quality of life and social cohesion.
Facilities for youth and residents
The new space serves as a hub for healthy occupation for Sotira’s children and youth, offering sports, recreation, and social interaction. It includes a multi-purpose court, sports games, outdoor gym equipment for children and adults, and green relaxation areas.
Located in Sotira’s central core, it connects functionally with the catechism building, First Primary School of Sotira, and Social Services Center, creating a unified youth and community hub for the broader Famagusta area.
