A 22-year-old contract soldier was brought before Larnaca district court under heavy security on Wednesday, following his arrest for the Dromolaxia attempted murder of a 47-year-old businessman on 31 July.
Members of Larnaca CID arrested him on Tuesday in a car park after securing testimony from a key witness. Investigators had already been analysing material collected over the past three and a half months, including CCTV footage tracing the suspect’s escape route from the scene of the attack.
Along that route, the suspect reportedly dropped the neck gaiter he was wearing, which provided genetic material now expected to be matched to him. A loaded pistol found in his home during a police search has been sent for forensic testing, with authorities examining whether it may be linked to other recent criminal cases.
Police sources say the 22-year-old had been boasting in recent weeks about his “accomplishments”, a claim that also reached investigators. Searches were carried out at his military unit on Wednesday morning, and evidence was seized.
The police requested an eight-day remand, which the court approved.
