Situation in Northern Gaza increasingly resembles ethnic cleansing, says Borrell

Date:

“The words ethnic cleansing are increasingly used to describe what is going on in northern Gaza,” wrote outgoing EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell in a post on X (formerly Twitter), condemning recent Israeli strikes on Jabalia, where, he noted, there were significant civilian casualties.

Mr Borrell stressed that the daily displacement of residents “violates international law” and that “using hunger as a weapon of war is also against international humanitarian law,” reminding that, according to UN criteria, northern Gaza is at risk of famine.

“This man-made catastrophe must be averted. Israel, as [an] occupying power, has the obligation to act by letting aid in,” he emphasised.

He added that it is “for the international community and Israel’s main allies to take urgent measures for an end of the suffering of the Palestinians and for the liberation of the hostages,” noting that, as UN reports indicate, action by all parties is required “within days, not weeks.”
