Shopping continues as normal on Saturday despite public holiday

Supermarkets to remain open

Public holiday shopping will continue without disruption on Saturday, 17 January, despite the day being declared a public holiday due to the funeral of former President George Vassiliou.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Andreas Hadjiadamou, Executive Secretary of the Pancyprian Supermarkets Association, confirmed that supermarkets will operate as usual.

No changes for the private sector

Although the Council of Ministers has designated the day as a public holiday, the private sector will continue to function normally. Hadjiadamou said there will be no change in operating arrangements, stressing that supermarkets and private businesses will follow standard Saturday schedules.

Employees will work as they normally do on Saturdays, with the relevant legislation governing Saturday and Sunday employment applying as usual.

What consumers should expect

For shoppers, this means no disruption to access or opening hours, with public holiday shopping proceeding under the same conditions as a typical weekend day.

No special arrangements or closures have been announced for the retail sector.
