Serious allegation of teacher bullying students

Anonymous complaint sparks concern

A recent anonymous complaint about possible intimidation and belittling of students by a teacher has prompted an investigation by the Cyprus Anti-Corruption Authority. Commissioner for Children’s Rights Elena Perikleous spoke publicly on the issue during the TV programme “Mesimeri kai Kati”.

Perikleous explained that the complaint was initially submitted to an independent authority. She stressed that the announcement was issued because there was no direct way to inform the complainant. At this stage, authorities have not confirmed the accuracy of the allegations.

Seriousness of allegations

The Commissioner emphasised the potential severity of the claims. She noted that “if intimidation, belittling, or stigma towards children by a teacher is indeed occurring, it is a deeply concerning issue.” Particular attention was drawn to the possibility of students being targeted due to their socioeconomic background. “If true, it is extremely serious for children to be stigmatized for such reasons,” she added.

Gaps in school reporting

Perikleous also highlighted concerns regarding school procedures, noting that the complaint was made to an external authority rather than at the school when the incidents occurred. This may indicate gaps in reporting and management systems.

She stressed that “a modern school should inspire children to report such incidents immediately, without needing to approach external authorities.” The Commissioner said she has already raised the issue of reporting mechanisms with the Ministry of Education, calling for an effective system to handle such complaints.

Broader context

According to Perikleous, such incidents are not isolated and often reflect wider inequality issues. She underlined that schools have a duty to identify and intervene early, ensuring children are protected from stigma.

The identity of the complainant remains unknown, and the Ministry of Education is expected to take the necessary steps to investigate the matter further.
