Search continues for missing German tourist in Crete

Date:

A search-and-rescue operation is underway in the mountains of Chania, Crete, to locate a 21-year-old German tourist who has been missing since Thursday. He was last seen near Xyloskalo, Omalos, close to the entrance of the Samaria Gorge, which is currently closed to the public due to the time of year.

Authorities were alerted to his disappearance on Saturday evening by the owner of a car hire company, from which the young tourist had rented a vehicle. The search began at first light on Sunday and involves three fire brigade vehicles and six firefighters, along with specialised EMAK rescue forces and two drones.

The police are also assisting in the operation, and the coast guard has been placed on alert in case their support is needed. Rescue teams continue to comb the rugged and mountainous terrain in an effort to locate the missing tourist.
