Following recent incidents of violence in schools, the president of the Confederation of Parents of Secondary Education, Loizos Constantinou, expressed serious concern, stressing that school violence in Cyprus has now taken on a nationwide scale.
“We are the first to worry, the first to raise our voices when we saw this phenomenon developing and spreading across Cyprus. These incidents are not limited to one area — they are everywhere. In some schools they are more intense, in others less so,” he said.
Cameras used to prevent vandalism, not policing
Regarding the installation of cameras in schools, Mr Constantinou clarified that it is not a policing measure but a way to prevent vandalism.
“The cameras are not installed for security purposes but as a deterrent to vandalism. Wherever cameras have been installed, incidents have decreased significantly,” he noted.
Unsafe buses for school trips condemned
Asked about the recent case involving unsuitable buses sent for a school trip, the Confederation president said he immediately contacted both the Minister of Transport and the Minister of Education.
“It is unacceptable for professionals to take on the responsibility of transporting children and then send buses and drivers who are not fit for the job. Since the state itself issued an order banning the use of those specific buses, the consequences and penalties for the company must also be announced,” he said.
