Schools across Cyprus continue to operate normally despite heightened concerns stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has drawn attention on the island since the beginning of the week.
Limited closures and stricter measures in specific cases
According to local sources, some schools near critical infrastructure have implemented stricter safety measures due to their proximity to potential targets in case of an attack related to the Middle East conflict.
In Larnaca, a private primary school has asked parents to keep children at home for the past few days. Similarly, both the kindergarten and primary school in the Akrotiri community remain closed. All other schools across Cyprus continue to operate as usual.
Ministry circulates emergency guidelines
Ilias Markatzis, head of the Safety and Health Department at the Ministry of Education, confirmed that a one-page circular has been sent to all schools.
While a wide range of scenarios could potentially affect educational institutions, the circular specifically addresses life-threatening situations without prior warning. It outlines steps that students and teachers should follow in case school evacuation becomes necessary.
Schools have also incorporated exercises for such emergencies in recent years, complementing existing drills for earthquakes and other disasters.
What to do during an alarm
In the event an alarm is triggered, instructions will be issued by the relevant authorities, including Civil Defence, and communicated to schools by the Ministry of Education.
Immediate actions for students and staff are detailed in the Civil Defence Plan (point 3.2):
- Indoors: Movement is prohibited. Students and staff must take cover under furniture or desks, staying away from windows and glass.
- Outdoors: Individuals should take cover near walls or structures, lying face down while protecting their heads with their hands.
- After the incident: Once the immediate danger has passed, relocation to basement or ground-level areas is advised, or full evacuation using pre-determined escape routes if conditions allow.
Coordination and parental guidance
The Ministry emphasises that any decision to close schools or conduct emergency evacuations will be made solely by the relevant state authorities. Additional guidance will be provided to schools for orderly communication with parents to collect their children safely.
The Ministry of Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance (ΥΠΑΝ) notes that these reminders are purely precautionary. For any inquiries, the public can contact ΥΠΑΝ at 22800907 or 22800988.
