Russia fires powerful ballistic missile in mass attack on Kyiv

Date:

Russia launches major overnight assault

A large-scale attack unfolded overnight after Russia carried out one of its biggest bombardments of the Kyiv region since the start of the war, including the reported use of a new hypersonic ballistic missile.

The United States classifies the Oreshnik missile as an intermediate-range system capable of carrying multiple conventional or nuclear warheads. Its speed and flight path make interception extremely difficult for Ukraine’s air defence systems. This marks only the third reported use of the weapon during the war.

Casualties and widespread destruction

Ukrainian officials said at least four people were killed in the attack on Kyiv, while the capital and surrounding regions sustained multiple strikes.

Volodymyr Zelensky said one missile landed near the city of Bila Tserkva, calling for stronger international action and saying those responsible “must not go unpunished”.

Ukraine’s emergency services reported at least 87 injuries, including three children, as missile and drone strikes hit multiple locations.

European leaders condemn escalation

The use of the Oreshnik missile drew strong international reactions.

Kaja Kallas described its use as “reckless nuclear brinkmanship”, saying it represented a political scare tactic due to its nuclear-capable design.

Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack, calling it an escalation in Russia’s war of aggression.

Friedrich Merz also described the strike as a reckless escalation and reaffirmed Germany’s support for Ukraine.

Scale of missile and drone barrage

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched around 600 drones and 90 missiles overnight. It said air defence systems intercepted the majority of the weapons, though several still reached their targets.

Officials described the Kyiv attack as one of the most intense strikes on the capital since the war began.

Russia and Ukraine exchange accusations

The Russian Defence Ministry said the strikes were carried out in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory, including alleged strikes on civilian targets.

Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of carrying out a “terrorist” attack in occupied eastern Ukraine, while Moscow state media reported casualties in a separate incident in Luhansk.

Ukraine rejected the claims, insisting its forces target only military infrastructure and facilities used for combat operations.

War tensions continue to escalate

The overnight Kyiv attack came shortly after renewed Russian statements of retaliation following Ukrainian operations in occupied regions.

Volodymyr Zelensky warned that stronger international pressure was needed on Moscow, saying decisions from the United States and Europe were essential to force a path towards peace.

Meanwhile, residents in Kyiv described hours of explosions and sheltering underground as air raid alerts sounded across the city during the strikes.
