Russia carries out attack on kindergarten despite ceasefire

Date:

Ukraine has accused Russia of breaching a unilateral ceasefire after a wave of drone and missile attacks targeted multiple cities, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday.

Zelensky described the attacks as “active hostilities and terrorist shelling”, claiming they hit both front-line positions and civilian areas across the country.

In the Sumy border region, local authorities reported that a woman was killed when a kindergarten building was struck. Officials confirmed that no children were present at the time of the attack.

The incident is part of a broader escalation despite ongoing claims of temporary ceasefire arrangements.

Competing ceasefire declarations

The current Ukraine-Russia ceasefire situation remains unclear, with both sides issuing separate unilateral truce announcements without agreed terms or monitoring mechanisms.

Russia previously called for a short ceasefire on 8–9 May to coincide with Victory Day commemorations, while Ukraine announced its own open-ended ceasefire beginning Tuesday midnight, stating it would respond “symmetrically” to any violations.

Ukrainian officials said Russian attacks on Tuesday alone killed at least 27 people, including 12 in Zaporizhzhia.

Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha criticised Moscow, saying the ceasefire announcements were “fake calls” that had nothing to do with diplomacy, accusing Russia of prioritising military displays over human life.

Moscow prepares for Victory Day

Russia is set to hold Victory Day commemorations on Saturday, including a military parade on Red Square, although authorities have reportedly scaled back events due to security concerns.

Meanwhile, residents in major cities including Moscow and St Petersburg have been warned of possible mobile internet disruptions.

Ongoing cross-border strikes

Russia said it had intercepted dozens of Ukrainian drones overnight, while Kyiv reported continued strikes deep inside Russian territory earlier this week.

The situation remains highly volatile, with both sides continuing military operations despite ceasefire declarations.
