Restoration of wildfire-affected areas in Troodos villages underway

Date:

The Troodos regeneration initiative is moving into the full implementation phase, as Coca-Cola HBC Cyprus advances a long-term programme aimed at restoring fire-affected mountain communities in Cyprus.

The project is supported by a €1 million donation from the Coca-Cola HBC Foundation and focuses on sustainable development across the fire-hit areas of the Troodos mountain region.

From planning to on-the-ground action

The Troodos regeneration programme, designed by the MountMed Institute following an initiative by the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation, is now being implemented in collaboration with local communities.

The initiative covers the 2026–2028 period and aims to support farmers, livestock breeders and beekeepers through continuous scientific guidance and practical interventions.

On-the-ground support for local communities

A key feature of the Troodos regeneration effort is the establishment of a dedicated Agricultural Applications Unit, which is already operational in the region.

The unit provides ongoing technical support to local producers, ensuring direct access to expertise and field-based solutions tailored to real community needs.

Digital campaign highlights real progress

A new digital campaign is showcasing the progress of the Troodos regeneration project, focusing on the people behind its implementation.

At the centre of the campaign is agronomist-researcher Nikolas Valanidis from MountMed Institute, who is actively working in the affected areas.

“From the first moment we arrived in the villages of Troodos, it became clear that people needed more than assistance. They needed continuous presence, guidance and practical solutions. Today, that is exactly what we provide,” he said.

Practical agricultural interventions underway

The Troodos regeneration programme includes a series of applied agricultural practices already being implemented in the field.

These include regenerative farming methods such as intercropping legumes with cereals, aimed at restoring soil fertility and supporting local livestock production.

Farmers and livestock breeders are also receiving free seed distribution as an immediate recovery measure, alongside daily field visits from experts who provide continuous guidance and technical support.

A long-term sustainability model

The broader programme includes more than 60 actions across six strategic pillars, focusing on ecosystem restoration, primary sector restructuring and community resilience.

The Troodos regeneration campaign serves as a snapshot of progress, highlighting that implementation is already underway rather than remaining at the planning stage.

Nikolas Valanidis noted that regeneration is a gradual process, but stressed that tangible progress is already visible in the field.

With continued support from the Coca-Cola HBC Foundation and partner organisations, the initiative is set to continue over the coming years, aiming to establish a new model for sustainable development in Cyprus’ mountain communities.
