Reports of illegal animal transport: Intensive checks ahead of Easter

Date:

Authorities in Cyprus are intensifying inspections and reporting illegal animal movements ahead of the Easter period, ensuring market stability.

Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou told RIK that no shortages of livestock are expected, as the number of animals scheduled for slaughter remains similar to last year.

Government support for farmers

Minister Panayiotou reassured citizens that the government will support farmers in rebuilding livestock populations and mitigating the impact of foot-and-mouth disease.

Research has identified challenges in importing animals from abroad, leading to a government decision to prioritise sourcing livestock from domestic farms. Supplementary imports will be arranged according to demand.

Increased inspections at meat markets

The Minister also confirmed that intensive checks are being carried out at wholesale and retail meat outlets to ensure compliance with regulations and maintain food safety standards.

Authorities emphasise ongoing vigilance to prevent illegal trade and protect both consumers and local farmers.
