Recommendations from Civil Defence Cyprus due to bad weather

Date:

The Civil Defence Cyprus, following an announcement by the Department of Meteorology regarding thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail expected to initially affect western areas and gradually other regions, has issued recommendations to the public.

The aim is prevention and proper preparation to minimize risks and negative consequences.

Self-protection measures against floods

  • Ensure drains outside your home or workplace are not blocked.
  • Check that gutters are functioning properly.
  • If you have a basement in a flood-prone area, create a water collection pit and install an automatic pump. Remove valuable items or equipment.
  • If you have a yard, leave exposed soil where possible to absorb water.
  • Secure objects that could be carried away by water (e.g. tanks, water heaters).
  • Repair any openings in boundary walls.
  • Prepare sandbags to prevent water from entering your property.
  • If heavy rainfall is expected, limit movement and avoid staying or working in basements.

During a flood

If indoors:

  • Leave basement areas and move to higher, safer ground.

If outdoors:

  • Do not cross flooded roads on foot or by vehicle.
  • Stop and change direction if you encounter a flooded road.
  • Abandon your vehicle if it becomes immobilized.
  • Stay away from power lines.
  • Avoid areas affected by landslides.

After a flood

  • Stay away from flooded or potentially dangerous areas.
  • Be cautious of damaged roads and unstable ground.
  • Floodwaters may be contaminated.
  • Do not obstruct rescue teams.
  • Avoid unnecessary phone use.

Before starting recovery:

  • Ensure authorities confirm the area is safe.
  • Turn off electricity and water supply.
  • Wear protective clothing and footwear.

Self-protection measures against tornadoes

If at home:

  • Remove or secure loose objects in your yard.
  • Close doors and windows, leaving internal shutters open to balance pressure.
  • Stay away from glass and movable objects.

If outdoors:

  • Monitor the tornado’s path and move away quickly.
  • If unable to escape, lie face down in a low spot and protect your head with your hands.
