Corruption allegations at India’s Ram Temple have led to arrests, investigations and political tensions in Uttar Pradesh, raising questions over the management of one of Hinduism’s most important religious sites.
The Ram Temple in Ayodhya, inaugurated two and a half years ago, has become a central symbol of India’s Hindu majoritarian movement. It now faces renewed scrutiny after claims that donations running into millions of dollars may have been misappropriated.
Allegations of embezzlement
Reports of financial irregularities first emerged after a former supervisor of the temple trust’s accounting team alleged missing funds. The claims sparked a public outcry and prompted opposition leaders to demand accountability.
Local authorities later formed a three-member investigation committee, which has since submitted a report. Police have registered a criminal case and arrested at least eight individuals linked to handling cash and donations.
The Ram Temple trust, which operates independently of the government, has not publicly released details of the findings. However, the controversy has intensified pressure on its leadership.
Political and religious impact
The Ram Temple has long been closely tied to India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the broader Hindu nationalist movement. Critics argue the scandal could damage the party’s standing ahead of upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh.
Opposition figures have accused the state government of protecting senior officials while targeting lower-level staff. Religious leaders and devotees have also expressed anger, with some alleging a lack of transparency in the handling of donations and valuables.
Growing public anger
Devotees have come forward claiming losses of offerings, including gold, silver and other valuables submitted to the trust. The resignation of senior trustees has done little to ease tensions among supporters who feel betrayed by the developments.
Analysts warn the controversy could deepen political divisions in India’s most populous state, where religious sentiment remains a powerful electoral force.
Wider political stakes
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the BJP face mounting scrutiny as the investigation continues. Political observers say the fallout could influence voter sentiment in a state that plays a decisive role in national politics.
The Ram Temple, once seen as a unifying symbol for its supporters, now sits at the centre of a widening political and legal storm.
