Public-school speech therapists exempt from annual licence fees

The House of Representatives unanimously passed a law exempting speech and language therapists employed in public education from the obligation to obtain and pay for an annual private practice licence.

The exemption had existed for years but was accidentally removed by a 2021 amendment.

What changes

Public-school speech therapists will no longer have to:

  • Pay the annual registration fee to the Cyprus Speech Therapists’ Register
  • Pay subscription to the professional association
  • Complete additional private-sector CPD seminars (they already attend state-organised training)

The bill was jointly submitted by DISY, AKEL, ELAM, EDEK, and independent MP Michalis Giakoumis.

Lawmakers said the 2021 change created unnecessary bureaucracy and financial burden for public servants who never intend to work privately.

The amendment takes immediate effect.
