Eight on board as Bombardier jet crashes
A private Bombardier Challenger 600 jet carrying eight people crashed during takeoff from Bangor International Airport in Maine on January 25, authorities said. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the incident occurred at around 19:45 local time.
Bangor International Airport reported that first responders were on the scene, assessing the situation. The runway was closed, and the public was urged to avoid the area. Flight cancellations were also reported.
Emergency response and investigation
The Bangor Police Department said that first responders remained at the crash site for several hours. No immediate updates on the passengers’ condition were provided.
Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash, with Maine State Police assisting local authorities.
Flight details
Officials said the aircraft had arrived in Maine from Texas before attempting takeoff. Flight-tracking data indicated the plane was departing Bangor when the crash occurred. The registered owner of the aircraft shares a Houston address with the law firm Arnold & Itkin. FAA records show the jet entered service in April 2020.
A government official briefed on the crash confirmed that a significant fire broke out after the aircraft went down.
Winter storm adds danger
The crash occurred amid a major winter storm affecting the Northeast. Bangor remains under a winter storm warning until January 27.
AccuWeather reported that snow had begun about two hours before the crash and conditions were rapidly deteriorating. Visibility was around three-fourths of a mile with a low ceiling of 1,100 feet. Temperatures were 2–3°C, with northeast winds of 5–10 mph.
The National Weather Service warned that severe conditions could make travel extremely hazardous.
Authorities continue monitoring
Investigators continue to examine the crash site. Officials have not released the identities or condition of those on board.
