Queen Sofia, King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and their two daughters travelled to Athens for Princess Irene’s last rites.
Her coffin, draped in the Greek flag, arrived at Athens Metropolitan Cathedral before 8am Monday. It lay in public view at Saint Eleftherios chapel until 10:30am.
Athens service and burial
The Greek Royal Family announced the funeral service for noon, followed by burial at Tatoi beside her parents and brother, closing a life tied to royal history.
She died during former King Constantine’s memorial, amplifying emotion.
Madrid first memorial
Saturday 17 January saw initial farewell at Madrid’s Saints Andrew and Demetrius Hellenic Orthodox Cathedral. Memorial service held privately for Spanish and Greek royals.
Under rain, Queen Sofia, King Felipe, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, Infanta Sofia, Infantas Elena and Cristina, plus Alexia de Grece (Spain resident) bid goodbye to sister and aunt.
