President on Ukraine: Parallels with the Turkish occupation

Date:

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, stressed the need for full respect of Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, highlighting the historical experience Cyprus has endured for 51 years under illegal Turkish occupation. He made the remarks during successive videoconferences today on the latest developments in the Ukraine issue, with the participation of European leaders, the President of the European Commission, the President of the European Council, and the President of the European Parliament.

During the videoconferences of the European People’s Party, the Coalition of the Willing – as a continuation of last Sunday’s videoconference – and the videoconference of EU member state leaders convened by the President of the European Council, there was a detailed briefing on yesterday’s meeting between the President of Ukraine and the President of the United States. This was followed by a substantive exchange of views among the leaders.

In his intervention, the President of the Republic of Cyprus underscored the critical importance of the issue of occupied Ukrainian territories, noting that any solution must be based on full respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. He stressed that Cyprus’s historical experience, with 37% of its territory remaining under illegal Turkish occupation for 51 years, clearly confirms the necessity of defending these principles without concessions or exceptions.

At the same time, he assured that the Republic of Cyprus will continue to stand consistently and resolutely by Ukraine and its people, supporting their just struggle for freedom, independence, and the restoration of their territorial integrity.

Finally, he emphasised that Cyprus, as a member state of the European Union that experiences the consequences of occupation, links its own experience inextricably with the European struggle against every policy of occupation and revisionism, which undermines peace, security and the international order.
