The President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, is paying a visit to Cyprus on Thursday afternoon and will meet with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, amid tight security measures and planned protests.
The meeting is scheduled for 18:00 at the Presidential Palace, in Nicosia.
Competent sources told CNA yesterday that Herzog’s visit is related to the Cyprus-Egypt Intergovernmental Summit and the Cyprus-Egypt-Greece Trilateral Summit taking place in Cairo on Wednesday and the developments in the region and especially in Syria but also the change in the US administration.
Developments, the same sources note, which, are bringing the countries of the region together.
According to the Police, increased security measures will be taken during the Israeli President’s visit. Specifically, from 16:00 until 21:00 (local time), roads will close for short periods at times in Larnaca district, on the Larnaca – Nicosia highway and in Nicosia district.
In the meantime, protests are planned for Herzog’s visit. Specifically, the Cyprus Peace Council is planning a protest at 16:00 at the Larnaca airport roundabout and at 16:30 a protest at the entrance of the Presidential Palace.
President Christodoulides will meet with the Israeli President after his arrival from Athens, where he will attend the funeral of former Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis at noon. The funeral will be held at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens at 12.00 noon.
