President: EU involvement crucial in Guterres’ efforts

Date:

President Nikos Christodoulides met on Friday at the Presidential Palace with a delegation from the Municipality of Famagusta and a group of foreign officials hosted by the municipality for events condemning the occupation.

During the meeting, the President briefed the delegation on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus talks, focusing particularly on the positive outcome of UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ recent visit to Cyprus.

EU involvement highlighted

Christodoulides also informed the delegation about his meeting earlier on Friday with the European Union’s Special Representative for Cyprus, Raffaele Fitto.

He highlighted the importance of the EU’s involvement in supporting the UN Secretary-General’s efforts, both regarding the form and content of a possible settlement and the potential benefits Turkey could gain in its relations with the European Union through steps towards resolving the Cyprus issue.

Next period considered crucial

The President outlined the efforts being made by the Cypriot government and himself personally towards achieving a solution to the Cyprus problem.

He stressed that the coming period will be particularly critical, with intensive consultations expected to convene an expanded conference by the UN Secretary-General.

Christodoulides said the goal is to announce the resumption of negotiations. He noted that Guterres himself has publicly referred to his strong political will, within the UN framework and existing convergences, to help the sides reach the “last mile” of the process.
