President Christodoulides to attend COP29 in Azerbaijan

Today, President of the Republic Mr Nikos Christodoulides departs for Baku, Azerbaijan, where he will participate in the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, COP29.

The summit will focus on strengthening funding to combat climate change, implementing the agreed terms of the Paris Agreement, and accelerating efforts for adaptation and mitigation of the impacts of climate change.

On the morning of 12 November, President Christodoulides will attend the opening ceremony of the Summit of Heads of State and Government, which will also be addressed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

President Christodoulides will deliver a statement during the National Statements of state and government leaders, where he will discuss the positions and actions of the Republic of Cyprus in addressing the consequences of climate change and Cyprus’s regional role in this direction.

In the evening, the President of the Republic will attend a dinner, hosted, in honour of the heads of state attending COP29, by the President of Azerbaijan.

Accompanying the President to Baku will be Foreign Minister Mr Konstantinos Kombos, Government Spokesperson Mr Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ms Thessalia Salina Siambou, Director of the President’s Diplomatic Office Mr Doros Venezis, and other officials. The President will return to Cyprus on 13 November.
