President of the Republic Mr Nikos Christodoulides today expressed his satisfaction with the progress made in implementing the measures announced by the Government in relation to those affected by the devastating wildfires in the Limassol district.
Addressing members of the Council of Ministers this morning at the start of the Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace, the President of the Republic said: “Today I want us to discuss the implementation of what we announced after the fires. I am satisfied with what I have seen so far regarding the implementation of our decisions. The big challenge is for them to be implemented in their entirety. Since various Ministries are involved, I would like us to discuss this today. Let’s start with the Ministry of the Interior, which has significant responsibility. It is important that one-off compensations have already been approved and are being paid. So far we are at 236 out of the 295 cases we have; by the end of the week, it is important that all affected individuals receive compensation.
The list has been completed regarding the cost of equipment per household, which will be provided along with the compensation, as we decided. The ETEK teams, I understand, have already completed cost assessments for approximately 300 partially damaged buildings. With the completion of inspections, the first affected people, relating to primary residences in need of repair, will sign and receive the financial amounts. Our goal is to proceed even within next week, if possible.
At the same time, it is important that we are proceeding at a fast pace to restore homes and businesses and enable people to return to their daily lives. This will take some time. Regarding the Ministry of Commerce, we are implementing two support measures for businesses and compensation for raw materials, goods, and equipment restoration. It is important that compensations have begun for businesses and self-employed individuals. The EAC did an excellent job; I also spoke yesterday with all the community leaders. Restoration has been completed in almost 92% of the affected areas, with 8% remaining that concerns remote properties.
Also important is the decision to cover electricity bills up to €500 for all residential and commercial customers whose homes and businesses were affected. As for the Ministry of Agriculture, the plan for immediate compensation and support for farmers and livestock breeders for one year, as we decided, due to income loss, has already begun. We need to move even faster. I understand that, so far, over 775 individuals have been compensated. It is important to complete this by next week.
Both plans regarding reactivation, infrastructure restoration and mechanical equipment were announced on 2 August. A total of 470 applications have been received; we must proceed immediately. Even though it is August, the Public Service must work to respond. It is important to note that yesterday, with the relevant Service, full restoration has been carried out in all communities. It is important to consider the anti-flood works and be prepared now. The points where interventions are needed have been identified, so these must be carried out immediately.
Since 1 August, we are implementing the plan for 100% generator coverage in fire-affected communities and 80% in the remaining communities. Regarding the Ministry of Labour, the support plan for employees unable to work due to damage at their workplaces has already gathered data. So far, more than 100 employees have responded, and the process continues.
As for the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, the relevant Services are in contact with 222 families. Of those, 115 were deemed in need and were given financial assistance for emergency needs. Social support will continue; it is particularly important.
We also have the Deputy Ministry of Tourism. Regarding accommodation, we agreed on a one-off grant, and it is important that this is completed. The Ministry of Transport is today bringing a proposal for a category we had not yet covered — for vehicles and machinery destroyed in the fire.
At the same time, on Friday, I received the reports from the four Services. Their conclusions include several suggestions and recommendations. Under your responsibility, ensure the immediate implementation of the recommendations outlined in their reports. Regular monitoring must be carried out to ensure they are implemented and the Council of Ministers kept informed.
As you also know, we requested the assistance of the US Government. There was a positive response, and today at 3pm, the team of ten American experts will arrive in Cyprus. They have international experience and, as I was told, handled wildfires in California, Hawaii, and other countries. They will investigate and assess the management of the recent wildfires. Their mission will include research into the causes, conditions, spread, firefighting efforts, and overall assessment of management measures. They will submit a report to me with documented suggestions for any improvements necessary, based on their findings, to strengthen weaknesses in all areas. I expect — please convey this — all involved Services of the Ministries to cooperate fully with them. I will also meet with them during their stay in Cyprus. Therefore, inform the Services to cooperate fully and facilitate them in any way. They are coming here to help us.”
