Powering knowledge: Energy education in times of climate crisis

Date:

As the world faces the climate, biodiversity, and pollution crises, the energy transition is a top global challenge. Education is key—not just for green skills, but for building climate resilience and active citizenship.

On May 28, 2025, at 14:30, the online conference “Powering Knowledge: Energy Education in Times of Climate Crisis” will bring together researchers, educators, civil society, and policy-makers to explore how energy education can drive just and sustainable change. The event will highlight global research and initiatives linking energy literacy with social justice and inclusive development.

Empowering youth through energy literacy

One of the projects that will be presented in the conference is the Energy Literacy for Youth (ELY), an EU-funded Erasmus+ project uniting partners from Poland, Germany, Czechia, Denmark, and Cyprus. It aims to empower marginalised youth by making energy literacy accessible and linking it to active citizenship and climate action.

Led by organisations including Fundacja Otwarty Plan, INFORSE-Europe, YEE, MigLAB, and Dias Media Group, ELY focuses on inclusion, equipping young people to engage in the green transition and shape their communities’ energy futures.

A gendered lens on energy transition

Another key feature of the conference is the Genesys Project, which explores energy transition as a gendered socio-technical system. It maps how gender dynamics shape—and are shaped by—technological, social, economic, and governance factors.

Funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Program, Genesys supports EU sustainability goals by promoting gender equality, increasing women’s leadership in energy, applying a gender lens to the SDGs, and generating evidence for equitable energy policies.

Thought leaders driving change

The conference will feature a dynamic panel of speakers and researchers working at the intersection of sociology, education, and climate action:

  • Magdalena Klarenbach (KLARA) – Sociologist, founder of the Open Plan Foundation, and a researcher on youth movements, experimental education, and societal transitions.

  • Hannah Heyenn – Trainer and researcher at MigLAB (Germany), with a focus on inclusion and participatory community-based approaches for marginalized communities.

  • Marta Warat – Sociologist at Jagiellonian University (Poland), specialising in gender equality, citizenship, and quality of life in Europe.

  • Tadeusz Rudek – Sociologist focused on energy transition and socio-technical change, with a PhD from Jagiellonian University and fellowships at Harvard, KCL, and ETH Zurich. His work examines how trust, values, and culture shape energy policy acceptance.

Join the conversation

This event is open to all interested in the intersection of energy, climate, education, and social justice—from academics and youth workers to policy-makers and activists. It offers a unique space to share strategies, tools, and real-world examples of how education can become a powerful driver of systemic change.
