Cyprus Police will introduce increased measures ahead of the three-day holiday weekend from Friday to Sunday, August 14-16, to enhance public safety and prevent crime.
Under the planned measures, police officers will have an increased presence on major roads and in busy areas, focusing on road safety as well as the prevention of crime, nuisance and antisocial behaviour.
Officers will be deployed at key points across the road network to assist with traffic management where necessary and carry out frequent checks.
Focus on major traffic offences
Particular attention will be given to offences that are among the main causes of serious and fatal road collisions.
Police checks will focus on:
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Excessive speed
- Dangerous overtaking
- Failure to wear a seat belt or protective helmet
- Mobile phone use while driving
- Dangerous or careless driving
The measures are intended to deter dangerous driving and improve road safety during a period when traffic is expected to increase.
Extra patrols to prevent crime
Additional security measures will also include motorised and foot patrols in both urban and rural areas.
The patrols will focus on preventing property offences, including burglaries and thefts.
Increased police measures will also be implemented in areas with high concentrations of people, including shopping streets, busy locations and holiday resorts, with the aim of protecting the public throughout the holiday weekend.
