Police open early probe into leaked Presidential video

Date:

Police investigation into the video leaked yesterday afternoon on platform X remains at an early stage. The footage captures conversations between former Energy Minister George Lakotrypis, President’s Office Director Charalambos Charalambous, and Cyfield Group Director George Chryschoos with alleged Dutch investors.

Material references include campaign funding up to one million euros and contributions to the First Lady’s Fund entity. Government labels it manipulation and hybrid threat, calling it a montage product.

Awaiting Lakotrypis testimony and evidence

Police Spokesman Byronas Byronos told Cyprus News Agency (CNA) authorities started examinations following yesterday’s complaint but cannot detail scope or extent yet.

Police awaits Lakotrypis to gather evidence for his official testimony to advance substantive investigation. Neither exact investigation subject nor potential offenses can be determined yet. “We’re at initial stage,” Byronos added.

No file forwarded to Law Office yet, though both Law Office and Police Chief informed.

TAE headquarters leads multi-unit probe

Investigation handled by TAE Headquarters with Cybercrime, Forensic Services, and other needed units.

Video publicly online, not in authorities’ possession. Police services initiated downloading and processing to verify content and nature. Too early for montage, alteration, or splicing assessments.

Offenses not limited to illegal private conversation recording. Investigation identifies emerging offenses, complaints, or video-extracted elements.

“Hybrid threat” possibility acknowledged

On government hybrid threat statements, Byronos explained term covers state/political figures security acts via illegal means. He called this scenario “very possible,” referring to Presidency statements without details.

No identification yet if “Emily Thompson” account is fake/constructed; investigation too early.

Measures and timeline expectations

Authorities taking all protection measures for targeted persons. No official institutional update expected before early next week, pending official testimony and data evaluation.
