Police investigate Fidias banner incident at Larnaca match

Date:

Cyprus Police are investigating the Fidias banner incident that occurred during a football match in Larnaca on Sunday, after a banner with offensive content was displayed in the stands.

The banner was unfurled ahead of the game between Freedom 24 Krasava ENY and APOEL at the “Ammochostos” stadium. According to Larnaca Police, it was placed in the section where APOEL supporters were gathered and contained insulting language directed at MEP Fidias Panayiotou.

Authorities confirmed they are probing the case under the 2008 Law on the Prevention and Suppression of Violence in Sports Venues, which prohibits the use of racist or abusive slogans and symbols.

Investigators have obtained CCTV footage from the stadium and are working to identify the individuals responsible for the incident. Once identified, they could face legal action.

Fidias, an elected independent MEP, has often sparked controversy with his outspoken style and social media presence, drawing both strong support and fierce criticism. He has has faced repeated criticism for controversial statements on international issues, including Ukraine and Cyprus. In this case, however, it is the perpetrators of the banner who are under scrutiny.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The banner displayed at the match, called Fidias “Turk-seed, Cyprus’ shame!!”
