Police alert over fake bank emails

Date:

Bank email scam warnings have been issued by the Cyprus Police, urging the public to be especially cautious of fraudulent emails that appear to be sent by banking institutions.

Authorities said the aim of the scammers is to obtain personal and banking information from unsuspecting citizens.

How the scam works

According to police, the emails are designed to look as if they originate from legitimate banks, but are in fact sent by criminals attempting to steal sensitive data.

Members of the public are strongly advised not to share personal information via email or other unofficial channels.

Instead, citizens should verify the identity of anyone contacting them through the official customer support channels of their bank.

Advice to the public

Police stressed that individuals should never disclose personal or banking details in response to suspicious messages.

Anyone who has already shared such information is urged to contact their bank immediately in order to prevent possible misuse.

Authorities continue to advise heightened vigilance as cyber fraud cases remain a growing threat.
