Thousands of holidaymakers face disruption today as Piraeus ferry departures remain suspended until further notice due to gale-force winds. On Friday morning, while the port of Piraeus was crowded with travellers, the boarding ramps of the ferries stayed closed.
Passengers booked on the first sailing at 06:45 to the Cyclades were informed that departure would be delayed until at least 13:00- a measure now applying to all Aegean island routes. The Port Authority confirmed, however, that the sailing ban does not apply to ferries serving the Saronic Gulf islands.
According to ERT News journalist Kostas Stamou, passengers carrying suitcases were seeking information, many saying that the delay notification should have been issued earlier. Travellers are now trying to contact ferry operators and travel agencies for updates, while Coast Guard officers at the port have been advising that ferries will remain anchored for the next few hours.
As the port awaits the official sailing ban announcement, vehicles are queuing behind the ferry ramps, and growing numbers of passenger- both holidaymakers and tourists- are gathering at the port gates.
