Phedonos case adjourned over judge exemption request

Date:

The Paphos mayor case is underway as the suspended Mayor of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos, appeared today before the Paphos Permanent Assizes Court in connection with allegations of rape.

During today’s proceedings, charges are expected to be formally read to the accused, who will be asked to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty.

Possible closed-door proceedings

According to information, the prosecution is expected to request that the hearing be conducted in camera, citing legal provisions aimed at protecting the privacy of the alleged victim.

The request is based on legislation concerning the protection of victims and witnesses in cases involving sexual violence, with authorities stressing the need for enhanced safeguards in such proceedings.

The defence team is expected to object to the request, maintaining their position that the hearing should remain open to the public.

Charges and legal conditions

The suspended mayor has signed a personal bail guarantee of €100,000 as a condition for his appearance before the court.

He faces four charges, including rape, indecent assault, administration of a noxious substance with intent to commit a felony or misdemeanour, and assault causing actual bodily harm.

The case was investigated by a special police unit following complaints filed by a businesswoman and the alleged victim.

Judicial recusal and court developments

The case has also seen judicial developments, with a judge requesting to be excluded from the three-member bench due to potential conflicts of interest.

The judge cited family-related legal history involving past civil action linked to the accused, as well as personal associations that could raise questions of impartiality.

Legal representatives welcomed the development, although stressing the need for the case to proceed without delay.

Next hearing set for June

The case has been adjourned and is scheduled to continue on 24 June as proceedings move forward at the Assizes Court.
