Legal expert discusses investigation concerns
Simos Angelides, a legal specialist, spoke on the program “Protoselido” about potential gaps in managing cases like the alleged assault of Phedonas Phedonos’ wife.
Angelides emphasized that discussions must address both the general framework and the specifics of this case. He noted that some documents circulating publicly have not yet been verified, and the police’s ex officio investigation will determine their authenticity.
Lack of formal complaint complicates proceedings
Angelides pointed out that, to date, the alleged victim has not filed a complaint with the police. While this complicates the investigation, it does not prevent it from moving forward, provided the disputed documents are found reliable. Additional testimony will play a decisive role in shaping the case.
Role of medical professionals
Referring to doctors who reportedly examined multiple incidents, Angelides said that verified medical records will clarify what was declared during hospital visits. He also stressed that repeated incidents or increased severity could have signaled a high-risk situation, obliging healthcare professionals to alert authorities under their responsibilities to prevent and address violence against women.
Reporting protocols for authorities
Angelides explained that immediate police notification is mandatory for minors, while for adults, authorities assess risk based on circumstances, potential repeat offenses, and threat levels. He underlined that police, hospital staff, and social services must be trained to handle and report such cases correctly.
VIP designation in medical documents
Addressing the “VIP” mark appearing in hospital records, Angelides noted that only the person who recorded it can explain its purpose. While it may indicate heightened sensitivity or that the person involved is politically exposed, no definitive conclusion can be drawn about its intent.
Institutional oversight and accountability
Angelides highlighted the importance of sharing such cases not only with the police but also with the Attorney General’s office to ensure institutional oversight, especially when procedural delays occur. He stressed the need to investigate handling during the period in question and determine if disciplinary or other responsibilities arise.
Building trust and support for victims
Angelides called for the state to inspire confidence in victims of violence so they feel safe coming forward. He emphasized that victims need robust legal, psychological, and medical support, access to shelters, and full information on their rights and remedies to prevent further harm or secondary victimization.
Comparison with other cases
Unlike previous incidents, Angelides noted, this case lacks an initial police complaint. However, if hospital records confirm the victim sought treatment for domestic abuse, these entries could serve as indirect testimony to support the investigation.
Importance of prompt state presence
Concluding, Angelides welcomed public statements from the mayor supporting the investigation, but stressed the critical need for immediate state presence when victims feel unsafe, ensuring that institutional support is available during highly distressing situations.
